You can now enjoy visiting cafes, restaurants, bars and dance clubs. It's back to dancing - smoke-free!

This took effect last month.

Feb 6, Little Red Riding Hood

It is said that the region of Shwalmstadt inspired the Brothers Grimm to write the fairy tale of Little Red Riding Hood. The city itself is a well preserved medieval fortification and walking around makes you feel like walking in a fairy tale.

The Museum of the Shwalm houses the fairy tale garb and a procession of the garbs is held every year in June.

Hmm, back then, it must have been totally unthinkable for young girls to travel on their own and the wolf was there to keep them locked up at home. Nowadays, women traveling solo is very much accepted and these women are smart enough to stay away from the big bad wolf.

We're all familiar with the large German cities: Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin and Cologne. Those are always the main cities to see but there are also smaller towns with the half-timber houses people associate with fairy tales that people are curious about. One such town is Trendelburg and its castle.

The Grimm brothers wrote Rapunzel's "hair-raising" story with Trendelburg as its location.

Remember Rapunzel's story? Didn't we all feel for this poor princess who was stuck in the tower all day, doing nothing but brush her long hair while gazing out the window? Don't we feel that way sometimes? Wishing to break out of routine and see the world? Why not this year? Let your hair down and plan to visit the fairy tale land of Germany.

Feb 4, Fairy tales in German towns

When my sisters and I were little, we always looked forward to bedtime to listen to Daddy tell his version of Hansel and Gretel. Our favorite part of the story is where the witch was stalking Hansel and Gretel way up in the trees, nothing heard except the rustling of leaves - and then, a shrill scream as the ugly witch swooped down and grabbed them! What an adventure! I still burst out running home when I'm out late at night with the dog when all I hear are the rustling of leaves.

Eventually, we found out that it wasn't Daddy who wrote Hansel and Gretel but the Grimm brothers (nice try, Daddy). They wrote about 200 stories of which we only know a handful. What are fairy tales doing in a travel site for women? Here's where they all come true! The locations exist and fairy tale enthusiasts get to visit the actual locations of these beloved fairy tales! There are 60 towns that comprise the German Fairy Tale Route - a route of more than 600 kilometers.

This week, we visit a few of these charming towns and reminisce some of those fairy tales.

Jan 31, Boutique Hotels in Berlin

Berlin conjures up images of avante-garde fashion and interior. If you want a taste of that during your stay in Europe, stay at the Q! Hotel. They have 77 unique futuristic rooms with some beds actually having minimalist space-age alcoves. Some baths are just beside the bed that if you got out in the morning, you'd immediately land in the bath! One unique feature in the hotel is the spa in the basement with a beach area complete with warm sand between your toes (thanks to underfloor heating.)

Or maybe you prefer bright white rooms with clean lines and a more classic approach, the Luxx11 hotel is the place to stay. They've got 72 apartments to choose from. And you can even check out what's happening in the areas around the hotel - the ground floor has up-to-the minute videos to check things out. For dinner, you can always try their hip restaurant.

Jan 31, Boutique Hotels in Nice

Nice has its share of boutique hotels. If you like funky, head for the Hi Hotel. Their 38 rooms are done in oh-so-bold colors like fuchsia, mauve, purple. The rooms are divided to nine wacky concepts such as the Indoor Terrace, filled with teak decking or techno rooms, where computer screens fill the room but as furniture.

If you're more into innovative and classic design, head for the Beau Rivage. Wonderful rooms with sleek decoration and high-technology. They've totally renovated the place in 2004 and being in the heart of the old town, what more do you want? A private beach? They have that (but it's only open from April to October)!

Jan 29, Boutique Hotels in Florence

The JK Place is located right in the heart of downtown Florence - Piazza Santa Maria Novella - great location! The hotel has a magnificent mix of classic and contemporary design. You'll want to transform your home by the time you're unpacking your bags in your bedroom. Now where do I get those zebra prints?

The Continentale is located by the Ponte Vecchio - can't complain about that. And since your days will be filled with Renaissance art and architecture, coming back to your room at the Continentale will be refreshing. Say hello to its sleek and minimalist design! White sheets, fluffy pillows, beautifully designed bathrooms!

Jan 29, Boutique Hotels in Europe

"Boutique" stands for exclusive, one of a kind, beautiful, charming and expensive. This goes for boutique hotels, too! This type of hotel has existed in Europe for ages but leave it to an American to brand it. It is said that it was Steve Rubell who coined the term "boutique hotel" when he, together with Ian Shrager, opened a hotel in New York called Morgans back in 1984.

I believe women, like myself, love the idea of staying at a boutique hotel to get away from their own homes (I'm saying this in a good way) for some pampering. Where we see everything in place and artistically decorated. Quirky designs are welcome since it remind us that we all have a quirky side.

Try staying at a boutique hotel - you will feel recharged and creative when you get back home.

Jan 24, Prado Museum

I owe my love of paintings to my History of Art professor, Miss Ong. She was able to make each painting come to life with her choice of words. That and she was oh-so-graceful and dresed like a fashion designer :-) Anyway, most of those paintings she talked about are conveniently located under one roof - the Prado Museum. This museum is said to be the largest art gallery in the world! There are less than 2,000 paintings on display and yet around 6,000 kept in storage due to lack of space.

Some of its famous paintings on display are that of Diego Velazquez (The Maids of Honor), Francisco Goya (The Nude Maja and The Clothed Maja), El Greco, Bartolome Esteban Murillo (Imaculada), and Hieronymus Bosch (The Garden of Earthly Delights).

I've been to the Prado Museum but rushed through it with a group, too bad. I would love to spend an entire day at the Prado Museum with someone who'd enjoy the paintings as much as I do - someone like Miss Ong :-)

Jan 22, Vatican Museums

It's been 10 years since my last visit to the Vatican Museums and it's back on my must-see list. Once is not enough to see the rich treasures in the Vatican Museums. The next visit will be on my own instead of with the groups I take around. I want to be able to drink in the beauty with my eyes and soul.

Everyone comes to the Vatican Museums to view the works of Michelangelo at the Sistine Chapel. They are breathtakingly beautiful. Here we are enjoying a few minutes (maybe an hour to some) gazing at his masterpiece while he spent years straining his eyes to finish it. His eyes were permanently damaged because of this commissioned work.

On your visit, check out the other museums as well. Such as the Raphael Rooms, Borgia Apartments and the Collection of Modern Religious Art.

Europe isn't just all shopping for those must sought after designer goodies or for tasting the famous mouth-watering dishes each city is known for. Take the time to visit the prized jewels of Europe - its museums. Where else can you find history and beauty under one roof?

Let's start with everyone's (well, almost everyone) top museum: The Louvre. It didn't need the added publicity Dan Brown gave it in the Da Vinci Code. Visitors come from all over the world for a glimpse of that famous smile. There has been news lately that the identity of the Mona Lisa has been identified, which brings her into the limelight once again.

If it's your first time to Paris, or you've visited a few times, a fresh look inside the Louvre is worth it every time.

Even if French Kiss isn't a classic compared to the first three movies I mentioned this week, I still love the movie because it transports me to France. paris and the French countryside, c'est magnifique (pardon my French spelling, I'm not really sure of it).

Alright, there were moments when I thought Kevin Kline exagerated his French accent but this is a comedy and don't we just love trying to speak French? The scenes of the countryside and the family celebration makes you want to go to France not only to enjoy the views but also celebrate the way the French do.

Scenes in the movie include the Eiffel tower, Champs Elysees and Hotel George V Quatre Saisons in Paris, Cannes and Valbonne.

I've been to London several times but I've never been to Notting Hill. I love this movie! Again, it's not just the characters but also the location that makes me wonder what it's really like at Notting Hill.

Whenever I visit London, I make it a point to go to bookstores, specially the small, quirky ones just like Hugh Grant's character had in the movie. I also love the park scene where Hugh Grant says, "whoopsie daisies." Not to mention the bench (I wonder if it really exists)! Anyway, I went out and bought a bench because of Notting Hill! So, if you want to get into the London spirit, watch this movie... again :-)

When I'm in the mood for Rome, I think of Roman Holiday. I've seen it a few times and I just love the way the characters and the city itself make me miss Rome.

The movie highlighted the Spanish Steps and the Boca da Verita. Wasn't that scene so adorable? Dating couples don't behave like that anymore. Everytime I'm in Rome, I always tell myself to visit the Mouth of Truth but when I get there, I back out due to the long line of art lovers and Roman Holiday fans. :-)

My favorite movies transport me to my favorite destinations, whether I've been there or not. When I'm in the mood to have a few days off but I can't due to school obligations, I settle for the next best thing - watching my favorite movies.

As you can see from the title, one of my favorite movies is the Sound of Music. I NEVER get tired of watching every scene! Oh alright, when I was younger, my sisters and I would always fastforward the "Climb Every Mountain" portion but I've learned to appreciate it now :-)

All of the movie's locations leave me breathless starting with the opening scene. Ahh, Salzburg is simply magnificent! The Mirabell Gardens, the snow-capped mountains, Baroque Churches plus the songs never cease to mesmerize me. By the end of the movie, I'm in the mood to rip down our curtains, sew me a dress and hop on the next flight to Austria!

In Italy, families celebrate the coming of the new year with pork and lentil dishes. Pork symbolizes the richness of life and the lentils represents money, money, money and lots of good fortune for the coming year. Ooh, my kind of celebration!

Another tradition is throwing old stuff out the window to symbolize getting rid of the old to make way for the new! If you find yourself wandering the streets in Italy on new year's eve, watch out for flying furniture!

Jan 1, Happy New Year, Dutch-style

New Year is not New Year without "oliebollen", a Dutch delicacy one can't live without during this period.

Most families nowadays buy ready-to-eat oliebollen but there are still some families who would rather prepare their own. We're one of them.

I prepare my family's meals every day of the year but on Dec 31, I leave the kitchen to the boys - my husband and 2 sons.

Jan gives out instructions and our sons gladly take charge with wooden spoons and glass bowls.

So what are oliebollen? These are deep-fried dough balls with raisins and currant lightly dusted with icing sugar. Unhealthy to my standards, but for the sake of tradition, I don't mind eating one or two, not more. Did I say they taste so good?

This year, our oliebollen looked like mini blowfish. Happy New Year to all!

Dec 17, Making it to Mnster

My girlfriends and I took the train from Enschede (in the Netherlands) to Mnster, Germany. Well, we almost missed the train because of the long line of people waiting to buy their tickets.

We boarded the train without the tickets as long as we purchased them at Gronau. What a relief! Read on about the Mnster Christmas market here...

Dec 13, O Christmas Tree

Every December, millions of families decorate their homes with a Christmas tree. But where did it originate from?

It is said to have originated in Germany somewhere in the 16th century and decorated with apples and other handmade ornaments.

Later on, it was told that Martin Luther went a step further by adding candles, symbolizing the star that led the wise men to the baby Jesus.

On Saturday, Dec 15, I head to where the Christmas tree tradition started - in Germany, to enjoy the ambiance of Mnster's Christmas market.

In the meantime, I'm making my rounds of glhwein and chocolate goodies. :-)

Nov 29, Scared of the camera?

I was watching a rerun of Suddenly Susan where Susan hates having her picture taken because they always come out wrong. Well, not everyone is as gorgeous as Brooke Shields, but we can practice some shots with the camera.

Have you seen some pictures you like in magazines? Rip them out and create a file! Then practice with these with a friend -- the good part is, you can see the results immediately!

Serious work for that upcoming holiday but you will be thankful when you've got a great set of vacation shots to treasure.

You can sip your cafe au lait or have a lunch in the second-floor coffee shop while writing to loved ones or while viewing the Pompidou Centre.

During the Christmas season, the beautiful staircase is decked with festive lights. Find the address here...

I love Christmas markets! They're coming up pretty soon and I can't wait to check out some of them. All the festive stalls and decor plus wine and chocolate and other fun things to try out are something I look forward to again.

You can still arrange some last minute trips to Europe just to feel Christmas, European style.

Nov 14, Paris on a bike

I've been on every mode of public transportation in Paris and on my next trip, I'm thinking of trying out the Velib bikes. I still have to gather my guts since I'm not used to biking in the big city.

I live in Holland and it is pure necessity to go around on a bicycle. And since we live in the countryside, cycling is stress free (but not when I first started 2 years ago).

So, as for a cycling experience in the streets of Paris? I can't wait!

Nov 10, The magic of Christmas

I love Christmas and I love Paris. This year, Printemps' Christmas theme is based on a Nordic Fairytale.

Lots of exciting activities are in store for everyone: snowy facades and animated show windows (my favorite); an amazing frozen labyrinth (aha, ice see you) and wonderful Scandinavian Christmas songs sung by the choir of the Swedish church of Paris... to name a few.

The Nordic Fairytale is from Nov 12 to Dec 31, 2007.

I hope not. But if this does happen and you're in London, head for the most complete shopping paradise -- all 10,000 square feet of travel goods. This happens to be the largest in the world and is found in Harrods, where else? All great chic collections are found here, so take your pick.

Oct 11, Shopping in Brussels

Paris is known to have the latest trends in fashion with the matching high prices. But did you know that Brussels has great fashion finds too? And, personally, I find the prices are a lot cheaper here than Paris.

I used to go to Brussels only as a stopover bringing my groups from Paris to Amsterdam. But now, Brussels isn't a stopover city for me. I'd love to stay a week here during the sale period... with my girlfriends!

Oct 8, Belgian waffles

When in Brussels, eat Belgian waffles.

I couldn't resist. After seeing several stalls of waffles, I ended up ordering a chocolate covered vegetarian waffle. When the waffle was ready, I was fumbling for my wallet and realized that I left it in the hotel room!

I only had Eur 2.20 on me and asked for the plain waffle sheepishly. I lacked 10 cents! I felt sooo embarrassed, I wanted to disappear. But they offered the waffle anyway. And it tasted delicious! After relishing each bite and licking my chocolate-covered fingers, I thanked them and rushed back to the hotel to pick up my wallet.

The girls were glad to see me back and I offered to pay the missing 10 cents but they said it was alright. I just bought a bottle of water instead.

I love Belgian waffles!
